The story behind the image:
This painting is part of a series of small artworks that I created, beginning with an abstract background (acrylic that has been spattered, dripped, textured, etc.) I then added a sheet of plexiglass, which floated above it, with a gold-leaf medallion on one side of the plexi, and an image of a blue jay (painted in oils) on the other. I’ve always had a strong attraction to birds, and feel that the blue jay is one of the more regal in appearance. When done, I realized that the dripping red in the background had a bit of a disquieting effect, as it makes one think of blood. I decided to leave it as a quiet reminder of the fact that birds spend most of their waking lives in hunt for food.
