This was the first painting I created after 911. I hadn’t been able to paint for several weeks and found myself creating this collage. It began with the center: Tibetan monks creating a mandala inside of a flower that represents the earth. Surrounding this are figures that represent the peoples of the world. There’s also an ancient temple in the background (Angkor Wat), gas-masked soldiers, and angels that pray for the survival of the planet. The textured background that all of this floats on is from a monoprint that I created in college many years ago. It felt like time to give something of my own past a new life. Gratefully, this piece helped me recover from a creative freeze.
